Upgrades, Patches and Plug-Ins
Programs are constantly being developed by software companies, whether it's adding new features that were missing or fixing 'undocumented features' (a.k.a. bugs) that have been discovered. Often the company will release the update as a patch that will allow users to update their software without having to re-install a complete new program. Unfortunately these patches can often be quite large and if they are only available as an Internet download, it may cost you quite a lot to keep your programs up to date. If these patches add new features, then this can be a real shame - you may not even find out about the patch if you don't trawl the Internet frequently. That's where we come in, saving you the trouble.
This month we planned to bring you the latest Service Release for Visual Studio (a reader's suggestion - it's a whopping 100Mb download) as well as most of the seperate pieces of the much delayed Microsoft Office Service Release 2 and the much requested NT Service Pack 4. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't seem to understand that here in the UK we pay by the minute for internet access, making downloading these upgrades expensive, and that not all their clients have access to the internet. The reasons are still unclear to us, but they will not give us permission to include any of their Service Releases on our SuperCDs. We think it's a little silly. Whether you love or hate Microsoft, most of us use at least a couple of their products. Do they think it's bad publicity to admit their products need fixes? Or are they so desperate for traffic on their Web site they need you stuck there for hours downloading?
Whatever the reason, we are not going to let them off so lightly. Many magazines just don't bother asking for permission before including patches or Service Releases - it's a testament to our integrity that we do. Text 100, Microsoft's PR agents in the UK, assure us they will be pursuing magazines that do, but perhaps you'd be kind enough to let us know if you happen to see MS patches on other CDs printed after the end of October. After you've grabbed it and installed it, of course.
If you'd like to get still more involved in our campaign to bring you Microsoft patches, email Mark Pinsent, UK Marketing Manager, Text 100 (and cc: to us) with something clever, like 'Let PC Plus run Microsoft updates on CD' as a subject. Remember though, general rants, conspiracy theories or threats on Bill Gates life won't help. Keep it short and let them know which Microsoft products you own, and if possible, which updates you would like us to run. If you don't have a modem, write a letter to Mark Pinsent, Text 100, and mail it to us here: New Media Editor, PC Plus, 30 Monmouth St., Bath. BA1 2BW. We will collect them and send them together.
And after all that, Microsoft did let us run a collection of monthly updates to the Encarta encyclopedia, covering the last year. Nothing like consistency. So enough campaigning - on to this month's updates!
Note: Please be sure that you are installing the upgrade for the correct version of the program. Check the About box under the Help menu of your program if you are unsure of your version number. Be sure to have a backup copy of the program before installing the upgrade. All these upgrades are for English language version of the programs, and may not work on other language versions.
